Georges St-Pierre has long been a fixture of the UFC, and as one of the many faces of MMA, it’s great to know the Welterweight Champion is back this Saturday night when UFC 111 begins to unfold. Can Hardy, as a steep underdog in the sports betting lines, be the one to finally topple St-Pierre?
Making easy work of both Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch in recent bouts, St-Pierre hasn’t given his betting backers any reason to doubt him. Part of what makes St-Pierre so dangerous is that it’s impossible to pigeon hole him as a striker, wrestler, grappler or submission specialist. He is, in fact, all of the above and more. He is perhaps the most complete fighter in MMA, with only Anderson Silva and Fedor Emelianenko being touted as heavily.
Dan Hardy, on the other hand, is strictly a striker who has shown flashes of promise on the mat. At just 27-years old, he has a mighty career ahead of him and his five fight undefeated streak is testament to the abilities he possesses.
It’s never fair to discredit one fighter’s abilities when he’s matched up against one of the best MMA talents the world has ever seen, but that’s just how good St-Pierre is. I mean, this is a champion who defeated Thiago Alves by unanimous decision with a torn groin, which essentially reduced him to fighting on just one leg.
On his feet, St-Pierre is an assassin, and on the ground he’s even more deadly. That leaves Hardy with very few outs in this fight. Hoping to land a haymaker or a pinpointed strike to St-Pierre is going to be virtually impossible considering how well St-Pierre took himself out of risk in his last fight with his leg giving out underneath him.
Like St-Pierre’s last opponent, Hardy has a long career ahead of him, and measuring himself against the best of the best is a must considering his amazing credentials thus far. Unfortunately, he’s not ready for a St. Pierre yet, and he’ll get some stern lessons while he attends the school of hard knocks in the octagon as he loses a decision to the polished and cerebral attack of St-Pierre at UFC 111.
My Pick: St-Pierre -700 OVER Hardy +450
